    Background

Background: CBX5 (chromobox protein homolog 5), also known as HP1 (heterochromatin protein 1 homolog alpha), is one of 3 isoforms of HP1 that binds heterochromatin and functions as a structural adaptor to stabilize and organize macromolecular complexes with nucleosomes for higher chromatin structure. All of the HP1 isoforms possess a chromodomain and chromoshadow domain and associate with methylated histones that mediate transcriptional repression.
