  • Target

    HSD17B3 (Hydroxysteroid (17-Beta) Dehydrogenase 3 (HSD17B3))

    Alternative Name

    HSD17B3

    Background

Synonyms: Sodium channel protein type 11 subunit alpha, Peripheral nerve sodium channel 5, PN5, Sensory neuron sodium channel 2, Sodium channel protein type XI subunit alpha, Voltage-gated sodium channel subunit alpha Nav1.9, hNaN, SCN11A, SCN12A, SNS2

Tissue Specificity: Expressed in the dorsal root ganglia and trigeminal ganglia, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, cerebellar cortex, spinal cord, spleen, small intestine and placenta.

Background: 17β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 (17β-HSD3) is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the HSD17B3 gene and is involved in androgen steroidogenesis. This isoform of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase is expressed predominantly in the testis and catalyzes the conversion of androstenedione to testosterone. It preferentially uses NADP as cofactor. Deficiency can result in male pseudohermaphroditism with gynecomastia.
