Background
- The choline transporter is a hemicholinium-3-sensitive phosphorylated transmembrane protein, the protein regulates high-affinity choline uptake, and plays the roles in disease states. CHT1(High-affinity choline transporter 1) imports choline from the extracellular space to the neuron with high affinity. Choline uptake is the rate-limiting step in acetylcholine synthesis. CHT1 is sodium ionand chloride ion-dependent. CHT1 is expressed in putamen, spinal cord and medulla and is specific for cholinergic neurons. CHT1 is specifically inhibited by nanomolar concentrations of hemicholinium 3. CHT1 belongs to the sodium: solute symporter (SSF) (TC 2.A.21) family.
