- Background
- Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases having diverse physiological functions. Growing evidence suggests that many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and some have potential as novel cancer and other disease biomarkers. Kallikrein 1 releases the vasoactive peptide, Lys-bradykinin, from low molecular weight kininogen. Low renal synthesis and urinary excretion of tissue kallikrein have been linked to hypertension in animals and humans and the kallikrein-kinin system may be involved in the development or progression of cardiovascular disease.Synonyms: EC 3.4.21.35, KLK-1, Kallikrein1, Kidney/pancreas/salivary gland kallikrein, Tissue kallikrein
