Background
IκB-alpha protein is a NF-κB inhibitory protein. It binds NF-κB and retains the complex in the cytoplasm, thereby preventing it from entering into nucleus and functioning as a transcription factor. Upon receiving a variety of signals, IκB-alpha undergoes phosphorylation at serine residues by an ubiquitin-dependent protein kinases and finally degraded by the proteasome. Free NF-κB then binds DNA and affects gene expression.Synonyms: I kappa B-alpha, I-kappa-B-alpha, IkB-alpha, IkappaBalpha, MAD3, Major histocompatibility complex enhancer-binding protein MAD3, NF-kappa-B inhibitor alpha, NFKBI
