    Background
OsrAAT is a Human Recombinant protein produced in Rice, which is a single, non-glycosylated polypeptidechain containing 384 amino acids and has a molecular mass of 43.1 kDa. OsrAAT is a serine protease inhibitor which its targets include elastase, plasmin, collagenase, thrombin, leucocytic proteases, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and plasminogen activator. In its absence, neutrophil elastase is free to break down elastin, which contributes to the elasticity of the lungs, resulting in respiratory complications such as emphysema, or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in adults and cirrhosis in adults or children. The OsrAAT protein is purified by chromatographic techniques.
