    Background
Polybromo 1 (PBRM1) protein, also known as BRG1-associated factor 180 (BAF180) is the chromatin targeting subunit of the SWI/SNF-B (PBAF) chromatin remodeling complex that is involved in transcriptional activation and repression of select genes. PBRM1 targets chromatin via its six bromodomains that recognize and bind acetylated histone lysine residues. Bromodomains function as 'readers' of these epigenetic histone marks and regulate chromatin structure and gene expression by linking associated proteins to the acetylated nucleosomal targets. PBRM1 also acts as an inhibitor of cell proliferation and demonstrates tumor suppressing properties in relation to breast, liver and lung cancers.
