Background
-
DC-SIGN is a dendritic cell receptor that can capture and transport HIV from mucosal areas to remote lymph nodes where HIV is then transferred to CD4+ T lymphocytes. Multiple strains of HIV-1, HIV-2, and SIV bind to dendritic cells via DC-SIGN. DC-SIGN is expressed in mucosal tissues, placenta, small intestine, and rectum.
