Background
- Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces Venezuela. It is bacteriostatic in action and functions by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria. Chloramphenicol is effective against a wide range of bacteria and as such has been used to treat a wide variety of human and animal conditions however due to its serious side effects in humans it is usually only used to treat serious infections.Synonyms: Chloromycetin
