Background
- Transketolase dependent reactions regulate the nonoxidative part of the pentose-phosphate-pathway (PPP) in glucose metabolism. This pathway generates NADPH and pentose phosphates. The latter are important for nucleic acid metabolism. In addition to the ubiquitous transketolase (TKT) other transketolase-like proteins exist (e.g. in heart, lung, brain, kidney, placenta, pancreas). Increased expression was found in fast growing malignant tumors.
