    Alternative Name

    SETDB1

    Background

Background: SETDB1 (SET domain, bifurcated 1) is a member of the SET (SuVar3-9, enhancer of Zeste, Trithorax) domain-containing protein family that functions as a histone and DNA methyltransferase. SETDB1 was identified through its interaction with ERG (ets-related gene) and KAP1 (KRAB-associated protein1) and was later demonstrated to interact with HDAC1/2 (histone deacetylase 1/2), DNA methyltransferase 3s (DNMT3s), mSin3A/3B, HP1, and MBD1. SETDB1 is suggested to play a role in transcriptional repression important to early development.
