    Background

Background: Sirtuin 6 (Sirt6) is a NAD-dependent protein deacetylase. Sirt6 displays deacetylase activity towards 'Lys-9' and 'Lys-56' of histone H3. It modulates acetylation of histone H3 in telomeric chromatin during the S-phase of the cell cycle. Sirt6 also deacetylates 'Lys-9' of histone H3 at NF-kappa-B target promoters and may down-regulate the expression of a subset of NF-kappa-B target genes. Sirt6 is important for the modulation of cellular senescence and apoptosis and the maintenance of telomeres and genomic stability [taken from the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) Q8N6T7].
