    Background

Background: SA2 is a component of the multisubunit cohesin complex. Cohesin functions to hold sister chromatids together during meiosis and mitosis and ensure proper segregation of chromosomes. Cohesin must dissociate from sister chromatids during prophase and metaphase so that they can segregate to opposite poles of the cell during anaphase. As part of the cohesin complex, SA2 appears to play a role in cohesin dissociation required for sister chromatid separation. Interestingly, SA2 has been demonstrated to also exhibit transcriptional regulatory activity through an association with NF-kappaB.
