Synonyms: Mitochondrial fission 1 protein, FIS1 homolog, hFis1, Tetratricopeptide repeat protein 11, TPR repeat protein 11, FIS1, TTC11, CGI-135
Tissue Specificity: Ubiquitous. Expressed in the rod and cone photoreceptors, extending from the tips of the outer segment (OS) through the inner segment (IS) and outer nuclear layer (ONL) and into the synaptic terminals of the outer plexiform layer (ONL). Also detected in the bipolar, horizontal and amacrine cells in the inner nuclear layer (INL), extending to the inner plexiform layer (IPL) and though the ganglion cell layer (GCL) and into the nerve fiber layer (NFL) (at protein level).
Background: Integrin alpha-2, or CD49b (cluster of differentiation 49b), is a protein which in humans is encoded by the CD49b gene. This gene encodes the alpha subunit of a transmembrane receptor for collagens and related proteins. The encoded protein forms a heterodimer with a beta subunit and mediates the adhesion of platelets and other cell types to the extracellular matrix. Loss of the encoded protein is associated with bleeding disorder platelet-type 9. Antibodies against this protein are found in several immune disorders, including neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia. This gene is located adjacent to a related alpha subunit gene. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
