Background: Gamma-synuclein is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SNCG gene. This gene encodes a member of the synuclein family of proteins which are believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations in this gene have also been associated with breast tumor development.
