Background: P24 is the core protein in the HIV virus particle. It forms the capsid of the virus, the case in which HIV's RNA genome is kept. Testing for heat-denatured p24 antigen was found in a 2002 study to be statistically equivalent to CD4 count and viral load tests.    .
