    Precaution of Use

WARNING: Reagents contain sodium azide. Sodium azide is very toxic if ingested or inhaled. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. Wear eye or face protection when handling. If skin or eye contact occurs, wash with copious amounts of water. If ingested or inhaled, contact a physician immediately. Sodium azide yields toxic hydrazoic acid under acidic conditions. Dilute azide-containing compounds in running water before discarding to avoid accumulation of potentially explosive deposits in lead or copper plumbing.

    Background

Human chorionic gonadotropin (CG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by trophoblastic cells of the placenta beginning 10 to 12 days after conception. It is a glycoprotein composed of 237 amino acids with a molecular mass of 25.7 kDa. It is heterodimeric, with an alpha (alpha) subunit identical to that of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and beta (beta) subunit that is unique to hCG. beta subunit is secreted by some cancers including seminoma, choriocarcinoma, germ cell tumors, hydatidiform mole formation, teratoma with elements of choriocarcinoma, and islet cell tumor. Combined with alpha-fetoprotein, beta-HCG is an excellent tumor marker for the monitoring of germ cell tumors.
