- Background
- HPX, also known as hemopexin, is a plasma glycoprotein that belongs to the family of the acute-phase proteins whose synthesis is induced after an inflammatory event. This protein associates with HDL and influence the inflammatory properties of HDL. In addition it can also be said that HDL from HX-null mice is pro-inflammatory. Also, this protein binds heme and transports it to the liver for breakdown and iron recovery, after which the free hemopexin returns to the circulation and is expressed in the central nervous system, in the retina, and in peripheral nerves has also been observed. Recombinant human HPX, fused to His-tag at C-terminus, was expressed in insect cell and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.
