Data show that the RNA-edited bladder cancer associated protein (BLCAP) gene may stably promote cell proliferation.
Immunoexpression analysis and prognostic value of BLCAP in breast cancer
observed a general decrease in BLCAP-editing level in astrocytomas, bladder cancer and colorectal cancer when compared with the related normal tissues
Data show that loss of BLCAP expression is associated with tumor progression.
BLCAP may play a role not only in regulating cell proliferation but also in coordinating apoptosis and cell cycle via a novel way independent of p53 (show TP53 Proteins) and NF-kappaB (show NFKB1 Proteins).
Blcap is imprinted in mouse and human brain, but not in other mouse tissues.
This gene encodes a tumor suppressor protein that reduces cell growth by stimulating apoptosis. The first intron of this gene contains the neuronatin gene, which is imprinted and only expressed from the paternal allele. This gene is imprinted in brain where it is differentially expressed from different promoters. Transcription from the upstream promoter occurs preferentially on the maternal allele, and transcripts are preferentially expressed from the downstream promoter on the paternal allele. Alternative promoters and alternative splicing result in multiple transcript variants that encode the same protein.
