Integrin-associated CD151 represses mammary branching morphogenesis by controlling progenitor cell activities, extracellular matrix integrity and transcription program.
Study provide additional evidence that CD151 acts to enhance tumor formation initiated by a range of oncogenes.
We identify CD151 as a critical factor in tetradecanoylphorbol acetate-dependent skin carcinogenesis.
Loss of CD151 is associated with drug sensitivity in skin squamous cell carcinoma.
study provides strong evidence that CD151 collaborates with LB integrins (particularly alpha6beta4 and ErbB2 (show ERBB2 Antibodies) (and EGFR (show EGFR Antibodies)) receptors to regulate multiple signaling pathways, thereby driving mammary tumor onset, survival, and metastasis
CD151 importantly modulates podocyte function.

CD151 maintains vascular stability by promoting endothelial cell adhesions, especially cell-cell adhesion, and confining cytoskeletal tension.
diminished metastasis in CD151-null host animals may be due to impaired tumor-endothelial interactions, with underlying defects in mouse lung endothelial cell extracellular matrix production.
Knockdown and knockout models revealed that CD151 and Tspan8 (show TSPAN8 Antibodies) act as molecular facilitators in wound healing, angiogenesis and tumor progression. [review]

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. Most of these members are cell-surface proteins that are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. The proteins mediate signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. This encoded protein is a cell surface glycoprotein that is known to complex with integrins and other transmembrane 4 superfamily proteins. It is involved in cellular processes including cell adhesion and may regulate integrin trafficking and/or function. This protein enhances cell motility, invasion and metastasis of cancer cells. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants that encode the same protein have been described for this gene.
