- Background
- Ghrelin is the endogenous ligand for the ghrelin receptor (GHSR). Accumulating evidence suggests that ghrelin may play a role in metabolism, body weight, feeding and adiposity. Ghrelin is also a hormone that stimulates growth hormone secretion and signals energy insufficiency via interaction with its receptor. The ghrelin receptor is located in both the central nervous system and the periphery. GHSR has been reported to be expressed primarily in brain and pituitary. Various other tissues, including colon, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, lung, placenta, stomach, thyroid, and vessel, express GHSR.Synonyms: GH-releasing peptide receptor, GHRP, Growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1
