- Comment
-
Biological activity: ED50 is 20 - 40 ng/ml in the presence of 50 pg/ml of IL-1α, corresponding to a specific activity of 2.5 - 5.0 x 105 units/mg as determined by its ability to inhibit the IL-1α stimulation of murine D10S cell.

- Background
- Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA or IL-RN) is a member of IL-1 family cytokine and it is a naturally occurring inflammatory inhibitor protein. It competes with IL-1α and IL-1β for binding to type I and type II receptors. It can modulate a variety of interleukin 1 related immune and inflammatory responses. IL-1RA has been shown to block the inflammatory responses induced by IL-1 both in vitro and in vivo model. Recombinant IL-1RA (anakinra) has been used as to treat rheumatoid arthritis. A polymorphism of IL-1RN gene is reported to be associated with increased risk of osteoporotic fractures, gastric cancer, bladder cancer, and other cancer types.
