Background
- Peripherin is a member of the intermediate filament family which includes desmin, peripherin and vimentin. It is found in neurons of the central nervous system and in sensory neurons of the peripheral nervous system and thus is a useful neuronal-specific marker. Peripherin mRNA can be alternatively spliced, producing 3 proteins having molecular weights of 56 kDa (Per-56), 58 kDa (Per-58) which represents wild type peripherin, and 61 kDa (Per-61).
