Tissue Specificity: Expressed at high levels in brain and immune system.
Background: P2X purinoceptor 5 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the P2RX5 gene. The product of this gene belongs to the family of purinoceptors for ATP. It has been identified that the P2RX5 gene within a BAC contig covering chromosome 17p13. This receptor functions as a ligand-gated ion channel. Several characteristic motifs of ATP-gated channels are present in its primary structure, but, unlike other members of the purinoceptors family, this receptor has only a single transmembrane domain. Quantitative dot blots revealed that P2X5R expression is highest in brain and immune system and is developmentally regulated.
Sequence Similarities: Belongs to the P2X receptor family.
