    Alternative Name

    calprotectin- S100A8/A9 complex

    Background

Calprotectin is a functional heterocomplex of small EF hand calcium-binding proteins S100A8 and S100A9. The heterocomplex is expressed in various cells and tissues and induced upon inflammation. The complex is released by neutrophilic granulocytes in inflammatory disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Released Calprotectin serves as a leukocyte chemoattractant and modulates inflammation via damage receptors. Via it's binding to the receptor of advanced glycation end-products (RAGE), calprotectin is implicated in chronic inflammatory conditions.
