Background
- Tritrichomonas foetus is a protozoon of the order Trichomonadidae, and it is characterized by three flagella at its fore end and one at its tail end. T. foetus is causes a specific venereal disease in cattle, which lead to abortions, endometritis and infertility. T. foetus has also been demonstrated in the gastrointestinal tract and on the nasal mucosa of pigs, but its pathogenetic relevance in this species is unclear. The first reports on the detection of T. foetus from faeces of cats suffering from chronic diarrhea are from 1996.
