It is an antioxidant enzyme present in the peroxisomes of aerobic cells and protects cells from the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Oxidative stress is hypothesized to play a role in the development of many chronic or late-onset diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, asthma, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, auto-immune diseases, etc.
