Background: Background: ADAMTS13 is part of the ADAMTS (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif) protein family that is responsible for cleaving von Willebrand Factor (vWF). ADAMTS13 is synthesized in the liver and secreted to the plasma. A deficiency of the ADAMTS13 protease activity results in unusually larger multimers of vWF and is associated with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
