    Background

Background: Insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) is a metalloendopeptidase that plays a primary role in the regulated degradation of insulin. In the cell, IDE is found mostly in the soluble cytosolic fraction, and small amounts exist in the plasma membrane, endosomes, and peroxisomes, however the highest relative concentration is found in the peroxisomes. IDE is proposed to be a multifunctional enzyme since it is also present in non-insulin sensitive cells. Other substrates of IDE include glucagon, IGF-II, atrial natriuretic factor, and TGF-alpha.
