Background
- Background: SYK (spleen tyrosine kinase) is a ubiquitously expressed tyrosine kinase that functions in mediating B and T-cell receptor signaling and is also important to various aspects of leukocyte function that involve cytoskeleton remodeling. In mediating hematopoietic cell signaling, SYK is a substrate of src family kinase activity and is a key-regulator of Akt kinase activity. SYK has also been found to be highly expressed in the mammary gland and has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. Invasive breast tumor cell lines have been shown to exhibit reduced or absent levels of SYK, further implicating a role in tumorigenesis and metastasis.
