Background
- Background: Notch2 is a member of the Notch family of transmembrane receptors. The Notch gene was first reported as a drosophila gene responsible for the presence of notches in the wingblades of a specific strain of flies. The Notch proteins mediate juxtacrine signals between adjacent cells and regulate cell fate determination during development. In mammals there are 4 Notch receptors (Notch 1-4). Like Notch1, Notch 2 is required for embryo viability. Although Notch1 and Notch 2 are functionally similar, they may not serve redundant functions in the cell.
