    Background

Background: The progesterone receptor (PR) is a member of the steroid receptor superfamily that binds progesterone and is critical to all aspects of reproductive development and the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. When bound by progesterone, PR enters the nucleus to function in gene-specific transcriptional activation. Progesterone receptor expression is regulated by estrogen. Recent studies have found that the status of the progesterone receptor in breast tumors may be an indicator of how tumors will respond to tamoxifen treatment.
