  • Target

    Tspan-8 (TSPAN8) (Tetraspanin 8 (TSPAN8))

    Alternative Name

    Tspan8

    Background

    Synonyms: Aflatoxin B1 aldehyde reductase member 2, AFB1 aldehyde reductase 1, AFB1-AR 1, Aldoketoreductase 7, Succinic semialdehyde reductase, SSA reductase, AKR7A2, AFAR, AFAR1, AKR7

Tissue Specificity: Expressed in basement membranes of lung and kidney. Muscle- and neuron-specific isoforms are found. Isoforms (y+) with the 4 AA insert and (z+8) isoforms with the 8 AA insert are all neuron-specific. Isoforms (z+11) are found in both neuronal and non-neuronal tissues.

Background: Tetraspanin-8 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the TSPAN8 gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. Most of these members are cell-surface proteins that are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. The proteins mediate signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. This encoded protein is a cell surface glycoprotein that is known to complex with integrins. This gene is expressed in different carcinomas. The use of alternate polyadenylation sites has been found for this gene.
