Background

Synonyms: Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1C, Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p57, p57Kip2, CDKN1C, KIP2
Tissue Specificity: Expressed in the heart, brain, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney, pancreas and testis. Expressed in the eye. High levels are seen in the placenta while low levels are seen in the liver.
Background: Occludin is an enzyme (EC 1.6) that oxidizes NADH. Predicted to enable protein domain specific binding activity. Involved in negative regulation of gene expression and tight junction organization. Located in several cellular components, including apical plasma membrane, apicolateral plasma membrane, and bicellular tight junction. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system, brain, genitourinary system, respiratory system, and sensory organ. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Crohn's disease and pseudo-TORCH syndrome 1. Orthologous to human OCLN (occludin).
