    Alternative Name

    Ubiquitin

    Background

Ubiquitin is a small, highly conserved regulatory protein that exists in all eukaryotic cells. Ubiquitin is covalently attached to a range of target proteins in order to mark these proteins for proteasomal degradation. Ubiquitination involves three classes of enzymes: E1s, ubiquitin-activating enzymes, E2s, ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes and E3s, ubiquitin-protein ligases.
