    Background: This gene encodes a protein initially identified as a thyroid-specific transcription factor. Mutations and deletions in this gene are associated with benign hereditary chorea, choreoathetosis, congenital hypothyroidism, and neonatal respiratory distress, and may be associated with thyroid cancer.
