Nanodiscs

Nanodiscs are artificial scaffolds that mimic the phospholipid bilayer surrounding every living cell. They allow the reconstitution and stabilization of membrane proteins (MPs) in a native conformation, thus enabling functional studies of these important drug targets. Nanodiscs might also pave the way for the application of membrane proteins in future diagnostic assays. The polymers used during this process have a dual function. It dissolves the cell membranes, like the detergent, and uses cellular phospholipids to form nanodisc around the membrane proteins.
