  1. Results report the sequences of two ST8Sia I mRNAs found in Xenopus laevis and their genomic organization; the canonical form resulted constituted of 5 exons and 4 introns, while the "short" mRNA lacks of the exon 2.

  2. Maternal Xlgd3 synthase mRNA could not be detected and showed a steady-state expression from gastrula to late tailbud stage.

  1. altered expression of miR (show MLXIP Proteins)-33a/let-7e was correlated with ST8SIA1 level, which might contribute to CRC (show CALR Proteins) progression

  2. Data suggest that ganglioside glycosyltransferases ST3GAL5 (show ST3GAL5 Proteins), ST8SIA1, and B4GALNT1 (show B4GALNT1 Proteins) are S-acylated at conserved cysteine residues located close to cytoplasmic border of their transmembrane domains; ST3Gal-II (show ST3GAL2 Proteins) is acylated at conserved cysteine residue in N-terminal cytoplasmic tail; for B4GALNT1 (show B4GALNT1 Proteins) and ST3Gal-II (show ST3GAL2 Proteins), dimer formation controls their S-acylation status.

  3. GD3 and GD3S are highly expressed in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) stem cell, play a key role in glioblastoma tumorigenicity, and are potential therapeutic targets against GBM.

  4. Results show that GD3S regulates stem cell function via c-Met and the expression of GD3S is regulated by FOXC2 (show FOXC2 Proteins), a transcription factor functioning downstream of several epithelial-mesenchymal transition signaling pathways.

  5. Though results are limited by the small sample size, variants in BDNF (show BDNF Proteins) and ST8SIA may slow down the early response to antidepressants in subjects non-exposed to stressors at the illness onset, with a remarkable gene-environment interaction

  6. TNF-alpha (show TNF Proteins) and IL-6 (show IL6 Proteins) secreted from keratinocytes enhanced ST8SIA1 expression in melanocytes.

ST8SIA1 Protein Profile

Protein Summary

Gangliosides are membrane-bound glycosphingolipids containing sialic acid. Ganglioside GD3 is known to be important for cell adhesion and growth of cultured malignant cells. The protein encoded by this gene is a type II membrane protein that catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to GM3 to produce gangliosides GD3 and GT3. The encoded protein may be found in the Golgi apparatus and is a member of glycosyltransferase family 29.
