Background
- Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) is the founding member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis regulator proteins encoded by the BCL2 gene. 1,2 Bcl-2 is an important regulator of photoreceptor cell death in retinal degenerations. 3 The bcl-2 protooncogene, which protects various cell types from apoptotic cell death, is expressed in the developing and adult nervous system. Bcl-2 may play an important role in survival of neurons both during development and throughout adult life. 4
