    Background

Background: Topoisomerases regulate topological states of DNA and are divided into type I and type II enzymes. Type II topoisomerases make double stranded breaks in DNA and allow the passage of another duplex DNA across the break to achieve unknotting of entangled DNA. Topo II Alpha is one of two described isoforms that are likely products of a gene duplication event. TopoII Alpha is also described to be involved in chromosome condensation, chromatid separation, and the relief of supercoil stress.
