Background
- Background: RENT1, also known as UPF1, is a key regulator of the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway. The NMD pathway eliminates mRNAs that prematurely terminate during translation and may serve to protect the cells from dominant-negative effects of truncated proteins, or as a means to regulate protein expression. RENT1 is an ATP-dependent 5'- 3' RNA helicase and ATPase that localizes to the cytoplasm and is part of a post-splicing multiprotein complex as well as an mRNA decay complex.
