    Background

    Background: Uracil-DNA glycosylase functions as an enzyme that excises uracil residues from DNA. Uracil residues in DNA can arise as a result of misincorporation of dUMP residues by DNA polymerase or from the deamination of cytosine. Defects in UNG are a cause of immunodeficiency with hyper-IgM type 5 syndrome (HIGM5) [taken from the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) P13051].
