    Background

Background: Cyclin C is a member of the cyclin family of regulatory proteins that associate with and activate cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) to regulate cell cycle progression. Cyclins exhibit periodicity in their expression and activity which is regulated transcriptionally and post-transcriptionally via phosphorylation and ubiquitination. Cyclin C associates with cyclin-dependent kinase 8 (CDK8). It is also a component of the Mediator complex, a coactivator complex that provides a scaffold to link gene-specific transcription factors to RNA polymerase II and the general transcription machinery.
