Background
Cytokeratins 5 and 6 are type II cytokeratins and consist of basic or neutral proteins which are arranged in pairs of heterotypic keratin chains coexpressed during differentiation of simple and stratified epithelial tissues. In normal tissue, Cyokeratin 5 is specifically expressed in the basal layer of the epidermis with family member KRT14 while Cytokeratin 6 is expressed with family members KRT16 and/or KRT17 in the filiform papillae of the tongue, the stratified epithelial lining of oral mucosa and esophagus, the outer root sheath of hair follicles, and the glandular epithelia. Cytokeratins 5 and 6 are often referred to together as "CK5/6", and are commonly expressed in various cancers, particularly those originating from epithelial tissues, and their presence is often used as a marker to identify squamous cell carcinomas or tumors with a basal cell-like phenotype [taken from NCBI Entrez Gene (Gene ID: < a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/3852" class="gene-values" target="_blank">3852 and < a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/3853" class="gene-values" target="_blank">3853)].
