Background: Protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor CD45 is expressed on all leukocytes. Alternate expression is detected in all lymphomas, hairy cell leukemias and acute non-lymphocytic leukemia. This transmembrane protein (type I), originally called leukocyte common antigen, is present on differentiated hematopoietic cells (except erythrocytes and platelets) and highly expressed in hairy cell leukemia, lymphomas, B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and acute non-lymphocytic leukemia.
