Background
Aurora 2/AIK, a cell cycle-regulated serine/threonine protein kinase, is overexpressed in many tumor cell lines. Phosphorylation of threonine 288, which is within the activation loop of the kinase, results in a significant increase in its enzymatic activity. Aurora 2/AIK is regulated by proteasome-dependent degradation, and phosphorylation on Thr288 may target it for degradation during mitosis. Thus, phosphorylation of Aurora 2/AIK at Thr288 is important for both kinase activity and stability.Synonyms: AIK1, ARK1, AURA, AURKA, AURORA2, Aurora/IPL1-related kinase 1, BTAK, Breast tumor-amplified kinase, STK15, STK6, Serine/threonine kinase 15, Serine/threonine-protein kinase 6
