Background
HOXA9 (homeobox A9) is a protein-coding gene. It acts as sequence-specific transcription factor which is part of a developmental regulatory system that provides cells with specific positional identities on the anterior-posterior axis. HOXA9 normally regulates mullerian duct differentiation and is expressed in epithelial ovarian cancer but not in normal ovarian surface epithelium. Diseases associated with HOXA9 include myelodysplastic syndromes and acute leukemia. Expression of these proteins is spatially and temporally regulated during embryonic development.
