Background: AARS2(Alanine--tRNA ligase, mitochondrial) is also named as KIAA1270, AARSL, bA444E17.1, AlaRS, AARSL, COXPD8, MTALARS, MT-ALARS and belongs to the class-II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase family. It catalyzes the attachment of alanine to tRNA(Ala) in a two-step reaction: alanine is first activated by ATP to form Ala-AMP and then transferred to the acceptor end of tRNA(Ala). It also edits incorrectly charged tRNA(Ala) via its editing domain. The full length 107 kDa protein has a transit peptide with 23 amino acids.
