    Background

Background: Ataxia telangiectasia, mutated (ATM) is the gene responsible for the neurodegenerative disease ataxia telangiectasia (AT). AT is characterized by neurodegeneration, immune dysfunction, sensitivity to DNA damage, and cancer predisposition. ATM is a protein kinase central to the DNA damage response. In response to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), ATM initiates a signaling cascade that involves the phosphorylation of a multitude of substrates which include p53, BRCA1, p53 binding protein, CHK2, RAD9, RAD17, and MDM4.
