    Background

    Synonyms: 5-Hydroxytryptamine Receptor 6, Serotonin Receptor 6, 5-HT-6, 5HT6R

Description: 5HT6 also known as 5-Hydroxytryptamine Receptor 6, Serotonin Receptor 6, or 5-HT-6, is a member of the serotonin (5-HT) family of receptors that comprises 14 members, classified into 7 distinct families (5HT1 to 5HT7). With the exception of 5HT3 that is a ligand-gated channel, all other family members are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) 1,2.The 5HT6 receptor is almost exclusively present in the central nervous system and is distributed in various brain regions, including the striatum, nucleus accumbens, hippocampus, thalamus, cerebellum, dentate gyrus, olfactory tubercles, amygdala, and cerebral cortex.1,2,5Based on the unique expression pattern of 5HT6 in the brain, research on the 5HT6 receptor has suggested its involvement in various neurological and psychiatric conditions, including mood disorders, schizophrenia, cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease 1,2,5. Indeed several antagonists of 5HT6 receptor have been examined in the context of schizophrenia3, Alzheimer's disease4 and cognitive impairment 5.
